It’s never too late to continue your education.
Kyle Tytler had a great job with Dawson Road Maintenance (DRM). He joined the company in 2021 as an Automotive Mechanic, but he wanted more.
“The more knowledge I have, not only is it better for myself and my career moving forward, but it will also benefit our company as well,” said Tytler, who operates out of the Williams Lake yard.
That is why Tytler began his Heavy Duty Equipment Technician apprenticeship certificate this fall with the B.C. Institute of Technology.
Currently, he is working alongside other Heavy Duty Mechanics in the shop, logging hours towards his certificate. Over the next four years of study, he will need to complete more than 6,000 work-based hours, along with two month in-class courses in each of the next four years.
“It’s going to be a lot of work, but it will be worth it and I’m looking forward to the challenge,” said Tytler.
Prior to the start of his apprenticeship, Tytler could be found working on DRM pickup trucks or Rapid Response units, while occasionally getting the call to go out for small repairs, such as a damaged hose on one of the bigger pieces of equipment.
During the first three years of the program, he will work on both heavy duty equipment and trucks. In his final year, he is leaning towards focusing heavy duty equipment, such as loaders, graders and excavators.
