Our Dawson Road Maintenance (DRM) team in Smithers continues to provide emergency support to their community. In June, they responded to an emergency situation in their own backyard.

A storm rolled in one evening and lightning struck the side of a mountain just above Tatlow Road, a few kilometres east of Smithers and our yard. By 9:30 p.m. that night, the fire forced evacuation orders for those east of the fire towards Telkwa and west of the Hudson Bay Mountain Resort.

At that time, DRM’s water truck fleet was stretched thin, as they dispatched their equipment out to battle blazes in other corners of the province. Still, they managed to supply three water trucks for local firefighters trying to contain the fire. Labourers and Machine Operators transported water trucks back and forth from the front lines to the shop all weekend.

The weather didn’t cooperate with DRM’s heroic efforts, as winds picked up and fanned the flames. However, DRM’s persistence and value of putting the people of our communities first didn’t waiver despite working long hours. Eventually, the fire got under control and the evacuation order was lifted.

Thank you for your commitment and your dedication to keeping your community safe all year round.
